Old North Wharf Dock Update

The new Old North Wharf dock is nearing completion. The guys from AGM have been making a lot of progress the past few weeks. I'd hate to see a big storm wipe out the dock again.

Here are a few recent pictures of the dock-

I spotted this 41' Coast Guard utility boat at Old South Wharf recently. She's from Florida. I'm not sure why she is here.

Other than that, it's been pretty uneventful as of late around the waterfront. A lot of the guys are still getting their 5 bushel limits of scallops every day. It turned out to be a very good year for anyone willing to put the time in.

Here are a couple of aerials my buddy, George Riethof grabbed of me when I was scalloping last week-

What's with the new Old North Wharf having siding? It never had that before, and I can't think of any other pier that has that. Very odd.

You noticed the siding too. I don't like it. And I wonder if it's HDC approved or does the HDC have any control over piers? The No Name Storm wiped out the old dock. The new siding on the dock just adds more area for waves and wind to destroy it faster and easier. We'll see what the next major storm does to this new pier.

I totally agree, and besides being stupid, it's FUGLY!

Y'all know the loot behind that project. It will look like whatever they want it to . . .

I'm no expert on anything. Believe me. The AGM guys do excellent work. They have been here a long time and have done many projects around the waterfront. This particular project, I'm perplexed. I don't understand the siding. I would think they would design the pier so that waves and water and current would flow through the pier and not be stopped by a wall of siding. Like I said, I am no expert on anything.

I can only assume that the siding prevents the waves from getting up underneath and popping off the cross planks which add alot of structual integrity by tying it all together. Once the planks are off, the rest off it can just sway back and forth and fall apart. It sure does look ugly, though.

They are slowly phasing out the 41 footers. You can buy them real cheap. Maybe Tim decided to get a REAL boat for towing. LOL

The vertical planking is a "wave screen". The purpose is to dissipate wake, especially from the Hy-line.

The Hy-Line should really slow down when she is coming into the inner harbor. A lot of people have complained of the wake she throws up and the resulting rocking of boats in the Boat Basin.
