One-Eyed Seal Pup

I was walking along a south shore beach today and spotted a seal pup. Upon closer inspection, I noticed it had only one eye. It was a very small pup, perhaps 30 or 40 pounds if that. It seemed very healthy and active. And the wound did not look infected. This is the second seal I have seen within the past few weeks with only one eye. I have never seen this before and I wonder what is causing this. Does anyone know why this is?

Snowy And Stormy Sunday

Calm/Coasties/Seals

Nice calm day today. I ventured out in my boat this afternoon to have a look around the waterfront. There's always something going on, even in the dead of winter.

The Coasties were out at the end of the east jetty repairing the fog horn and the green light-





I observed a lot of seals lounging on the rocks-





These little birds were on the deck of a sailboat moored in the mooring field-

Low Tide!!!

Extreme low tides lately. I was out poking around the waterfront late yesterday afternoon and took a few shots of the event.

Fishing Boats At Straight Wharf

At some point during the night, four western rigs came in and tied up to the east face of Straight Wharf. One scalloper and three draggers-



The Paul and Michelle is a big steel scalloper out of New Beige-


She tows two big dredges. I believe they are 14' wide-



No days off for her crew. They were busy doing gear work here-

Bird Watching At The Boat Basin

One of my favorite pastimes is bird watching. There is always something to see in the Boat Basin especially this time of the year when there is no boat activity there. I was there this afternoon and saw several different kinds of ducks.

Bay Scallop Boat Sinks

There was a bit of drama out at the west end this afternoon. Two commercial bay scallopers are very lucky to be alive. I was working on land and noticed two guys in some serious trouble. Their boat had sunk and they were quite a ways from land. Luckily they were able to stay with the boat until a fellow scalloper noticed what was going on and rushed over to rescue them. I saw what was going on and contacted the Marine Department. They were on scene a few moments later to assess the situation. Eventually they were able to drag the boat close to shore and de-water her. She was then towed to the ramp at Madaket by the Marine Department's boat.
