Nub War Update 2

Just received a call from my waterfront informant who is a member of SHAB. Here's the latest on the nub war. The commercial scallop season starts on Monday, November 3. We will be allowed to take nubs which have a raised annual growth ring. Same for Tuesday, November 4th. The 10mm rule will not be enforced on those two days. Tuesday, the State Biologist will be on Nantucket inspecting the fishermen's catch. There will be a SHAB meeting at 4:30 at a location to be announced later. SHAB and the biologist will discuss what to do next. Stay tuned for further developments.

That's good news. It indicates that the state(or anyone else for that matter)has no idea where the truth lies in regard to all the subtle facets of the scallop and its biology. Much is known and credit is due to those trying to figure it out. On the other hand, much is not known so it should continued to be studied before drastic changes are made to the rules of harvesting them.

" so it should continued to be studied before drastic changes are made to the rules of harvesting them."

So, if we believe (Belding,Kennedy, Boyce) that the nubs are spatting in their second spring; but, because MMA hasn't (two yrs late)confirmed the second spring spat; that we should kill them all now?

Sounds like good fisherman reasonining to me.

Anonymous, nobody is killing anything. A nub is a perfectly legal adult scallop with a raised annual growth ring. As far as I know it has not been proven that a nub spats in it's second year. Please come to the SHAB meeting on November 4th and become more informed. Thank you.

Thank you, anonymous. We will have a great time out there scalloping as we have been for so many years without a problem.

I'll put a fiver on 7k, or less.

7k bushels sounds pretty darn great to me! I've seen much much leaner years and have done very well financially. Everything will be fine. We can't have a banner year like last year every year.
