Fast Ferries

We have two high speed ferries running between Nantucket and Hyannis. One is the Hy-Line's Grey Lady and the other is the Steamship Authority's Iyanough. The Iyanough just came back on-line a few days ago. The north slip of the Steamship Authority received extensive work this winter and is not ready for use as of this writing. When the M/V Eagle and the Iyanough come in at the same time, the Iyanough has to lay out at the edge of the mooring field and wait for the Eagle to leave. Hopefully the north slip will be ready for use next week and nobody will be waiting around for an empty slip.

Here's a shot of the Grey Lady leaving the harbor-

And a shot of the Iyanough-

I spotted this heron feeding at Folgers Marsh this morning-

What is that merchandise that Victor Paving is bringing to the island? Sand? Am I wrong to suggest that perhaps bringing sand to Nantucket is somewhat unusual? Or, is it some sort of dirt or sand that's not available here? Fill us in on the details....

They have to bring sand in because all of the pits on Nantucket are sending what they have over the bluff in Sconset. Lugosch is the money behind Billy Cassidy buying up Visco and Holdgate Partners pits. Funny how things work!

That's interesting, anonymous. How long have they been importing sand to Nantucket? That's really bizarre...don't you think? I guess when you keep losing sand pits to silly developments like the Coffin pit etc you have no choice...

That helicopter lifted about 18 tons of sand from Jackson Point to Esther's a little while ago.

What are you talking about??

Anonymous said...

Sand, and about 35 tons of mulch.

Was this for the new house over there on Esther's? Why did they need all that sand?

High-tech septic system.

That rotorhead made 85 trips in a half-day.

I understand now. Thanks for the info.

Building on filled pits? I'm sure that they won't settle out over the next oh 25, 50, 100 years. Leaving the oblivious buyers with cracked foundations and leaning houses.
