Boat Ramp Repaired

The boat ramp at Children's Beach has been repaired for now. There was a deep trench between the concrete slab and the finger pier on the south side of the ramp for several weeks. This was an extreme hazard to the boaters using the ramp and the general public. I'm glad nobody broke an ankle and no boat trailers were damaged while the deep trench was there. I'm not sure who did the repairs but it looks like they used a combination of stone dust, gravel and large stones. This is a temporary repair until the next easterly wind washes everything out into the harbor. Here are some shots of the repair work-

There have been three or four little western rigged draggers fishing in the sound every night for the past several weeks. I believe they are targeting squid but don't quote me on that. The boats show up every night around 5 and fish through the night just to the NE of the fairway buoy and along the backside of Coatue up to about Second or Third Bend. I'm not sure where these boats are homeported. I would tend to think Hyannis. Here's a picture I grabbed last week of two of them working-

Toscana's barge was recently moved from the Town Pier over to the Great Harbor Yacht Club. Looks like they are working on the new travel lift pier over there. Notice one of the Reinemo boys using his C-Hawk boat as a little tug-

And finally, mother duck and her babies at the Cricks-

Ridiculous. Large trap rock should have been used with 1 1/2" gravel on top. That stone dust is going to wash right out.

Who is running this show?

Is it:

The Town "Project Administrator"?

The DPW "Engineer"?

Park & Rec?

Marine and Coastal Resource Dept?

That "repair job" is ridiculous! Who do they think they're kidding! Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves!

Wait till Mr. Yacht Club/hot tub/trust fund/hedge fund millionaire breaks an ankle in the repair. He'll wish his mother never met his father when he steps in that rockpile!

I'm not sure who did the repairs to the boat ramp. I would think that the DPW did it.

Looks like those draggers have been fishing inside the 3 Nm limit. Where's the enforcement?

That's a good point, cap. Maybe they are exempt for some reason? I'm sure if they were illegally fishing, Clambo would be all over them.

Hello folks, I'm sure they are catching squid,we bought some-it's great! They are only allowed to take that and a very small amount of flat fish. David G.

Those fellas are squidding, and doing good. They carry coastal access permits and are allowed to fish in tight like that.

Thanks for that, cappy. If those guys are doing so good squidding, why isn't there more of a fleet there working the area? There are only 3 or 4 boats fishing there every night. And what do they do with all the squid they land? Do people really eat that much of it to keep them fishing on it night after night after night?
Discuss.

Apparently the calamari market is huge but the boats are probably limited to a certain # of pounds daily they can catch.Whenever you see a fish dragger with a small mesh liner sewn inside of the main net he is squidding.Back in the 70's and 80's it was not unusual to see 50 squid boats off the south shore and Madaket.Like clockwork they showed up May 1st.Some years there was a Spanish or Portuguese buy/process boat.My personal take on squid is that the huge increase in seals will wipe out the squid in a few more years.I hope I am wrong.

They're not just taking squid. Some of those guy's purposly go right down several strings of our local boy's conch gear. One of our guys lost 130 pots in 2 days. They are "fishing" conch as an "incidental by-catch". Listen to channel 10 someday, or , better yet, just go out and watch them sweep up their conch gear. I've seen the mangled pots getting chucked right over the sides.
