Boat For Sale

My brother is selling his boat. He's not sure of the year (possibly 1950's) or manufacturers name. She's around 14' and is constructed of aluminum. He is asking $1,000 for the boat and trailer. This is your opportunity to own a classic boat. Call 508 228-7119 for more information.

No Way To Start The Day

The tender to the spud barge that has been working in the Boat Basin sunk last night. I helped the guys dewater her this morning. She was towed to Children's Beach where a local boatyard hauled her out to flush the engine. I'm letting the crew of the barge use my scallop boat as a tender while theirs is getting fixed. Here are a few pictures I took of the sinking-

Never a dull moment down around the waterfront.

Spud Barge

A little spud barge came into the Boat Basin overnight last night. This morning they started work in the area near the A&P. I'm not sure what they were doing but it looked like they were taking core samples.

Spring Morning

Beautiful day out on the water today. I took a few pictures while I was scalloping.

I met up with diver, Tim Mooney today out on the water. Tim gets his limit of scallops by diving for them. He does very well. I towed him around an area with one of my dredges so he could get an idea of what was on the bottom. We covered a lot of ground and found some good spots where there were scallops.

Dangerous Flotsam

While on my final check of the waterfront today, I met up with Captain Tobey Leske down on the point. He alerted me to a huge section of bulkhead that had been on the north shore of the Island all winter had washed up on the beach at Hulbert Ave recently. Someone anchored the section of bulkhead to the beach. Tobey also called the Coast Guard Station at Brant Point and let them know. This is an extreme hazard to navigation. Hopefully it will be cut up and disposed of immediately. If left to continue to float around the Island, it would certainly cause serious damage to a vessel and possible sinking and loss of life. Here are a couple of pictures I took of the dangerous flotsam this afternoon. Thanks, Tobey for the heads up!

Rough Crossing

An old Nantucket salt who was working on the Cliff called me today and said I had to come by and watch the SSA M/V Eagle as she was approaching Nantucket in the Sound. I drove over and had a look. When I got to the Cliff, she was halfway between Tuckernuck #1 and the fairway buoy. She was rolling violently and pushing a big bow wake. I'm surprised she was running on such a windy day as today.

Here's a shot of her approaching the lee of the jetties-

Marina: Nantucket's Only Woman Commercial Bay Scalloper

There are a few women who crew on bay scallop boats but Marina Finch is the only one who owns and operates her own scallop boat. Marina went with Neil Cocker as a culler on his boat for several years before she bought a little Grady White boat that Gibby Nickerson owned. She is now enjoying her second year as a commercial scalloper. This winter, Marina bought Karsten Reinemo's 23' Sea Ox boat which she will rig up and use next season.

Here are a couple pictures of Marina and her scallop boat-

Aerial Shots

While I was scalloping on the Madaket flats yesterday, my buddy, George Riethof flew over at 500' in a Cessna 402 and grabbed a few shots of me.

In the second picture, you can see the cloud of silt the starboard dredge was stirring up as it was being towed along the bottom. Interesting perspective.

Bucky

I watched Toscana Corporation's tug, Bucky, leave late this afternoon. She had a full barge of construction containers in tow.

Stern Trawlers

Three stern trawlers came in overnight last night and tied up to the east face of Straight Wharf. They were all western rigs homeported in New Beige. As soon as the wind laid down this afternoon, they all took off. No hanging around for those guys!

A Request From David Glidden

I was waiting for the temperature to make it to 28 degrees this morning so I could go out scalloping. The temp never made it to 28. while I was waiting down at the dock, David Glidden of Glidden's Seafood approached me with a letter. I asked his permission to post the letter here on my blog. He allowed me to post it.

Below is the letter. Click on the letter to enlarge.

What do you think? If we lose a day due to the cold, should we be allowed to fish on Saturday to make up that lost day? I think this is a good idea. Years ago we were allowed to fish on Saturdays. There are still a lot of scallops in the harbor waiting to be harvested. There is only one month left of the commercial bay scallop season left. If we don't catch the scallops now, they will die. Please leave a comment in the comment section of the blog or take the poll to the right in the sidebar. Thanks.

'Nother Nice Morning

Another beautiful morning out scalloping today. Flat calm and warm. I
had the pleasure of witnessing a spectacular sunrise while I was headed
to the scallop grounds-

Here's a video clip I shot this morning steaming out to the scallop grounds in my boat-
