Fourth Of July 2012

Hard to believe it's the Fourth of July. Summer is more than half over now much to my delight. Nantucket has become unlivable during the summer. The rudeness and traffic is way out of control. I'm looking forward to January February and March when we can have our island back. I went out in my boat today to escape the madness on shore for a few hours. I cruised around the inner harbor and took a few pictures-

Quite Waterfront/ Mike Allen's New Boat

It's very quiet around the waterfront now. In a week it will be the Fourth Of July. The halfway point of the summer. Hard to believe summer is half over already. The days are shorter by a min now. The weather finally warmed up a little after a very cold and windy spring. I wandered around the docks early this morning to investigate as I do most every morning. There are a few interesting boats there. One is a Hinckley that Kirby Jones is running. Looks as though her sides are shaved off towards her stern. And the usual suspect, Belle, Is at her summer slip at the fuel dock along with the Sea Owl. And I noticed Mike Allen built a beautiful new boat lately. She is located right near the A&P parking lot. I stopped and looked her over for a long time. She has really nice lines. Mike did a beautiful job building her.

The Summer That Never Was

It was bound to happen eventually. The summer that never was. We were long overdue for it. As I type this we are in the middle of a northeast gale. Boats are washing up on the beaches around the waterfront where they will stay wrecked forever never to be cleaned up. It's been cold, rainy and windy so far this summer. We have had a few nice days but they have been few and far between. In two and a half months summer will be over. Hopefully we can salvage September. I guess the only good news is that our winters have been nice and hot the past few. I snuck down to the waterfront late this afternoon to take a look at the storm-

Fog At The Waterfront

We are experiencing a typical spring on Nantucket. Foggy and rainy. It's going by fast! Almost Memorial Day. In any event, I went down to the waterfront early this morning to have a look around and grab a few shots.

Spring At The Waterfront

Spring has finally arrived at the waterfront after a long cold and windy spell. I went down early this morning to have a look around as I do every morning of the year. The Boat Basin is very quiet now. Only a few charter boats are in for the season. The old Rope Walk restaurant is being worked on and will change names for the summer. The next big event is the dreaded Figawi drunk fest on Memorial Day Weekend. I stay as far away from the waterfront and docks as I can that weekend. Every year during Figawi I go over to Tuckernuck and stay in a house over there while the Figawi drunks and the people they bring over here with them trash our waterfront and town. Here are a few scenes from this morning-

On a somber note, we lost a good man down at the waterfront recently. Kevin Madden passed over the bar this week. I knew Kevin a long time. He was a big man with a raspy voice. He crewed on Tommy Dunham's boat for many years. He always used to tell me how much he loved being out on the water every morning bay scalloping with the guys. I would always talk with Kevin whenever I saw him at the docks. He would talk about scalloping and the good old days with me. When he wasn't scalloping, you could find him driving his taxi. I will miss him.

BUCK OF THE WEEK:
This buck held onto his antlers for a long time. The bucks I have been documenting on all my trail cams around the island shed their antlers by March at the latest. Notice the abnormal right side with only the one point. Most likely he damaged that side during velvet causing the stunted growth.
