When I was out in 'Sconset today, I spotted something on Sankaty Light. Upon closer inspection, I saw what appeared to be lengths of wooden strapping held together with wire encircling the middle part of the Lighthouse. Anyone know what this is all about?

Something new for the fishermen to shoot at?
anonymous is correct. Sankaty Lighthouse has been shot at in the past from fishermen transiting the area.
I think its just a bit of dune-fencing-debris that blew off the Sconset Bluff Undernourishment Project. Not to worry... it will probably peel off and end up in Madaket soon with all of the other flotsam and monkeydunk.

HaHaHa! I don't think the multi-billionaires at Sankaty would allow a McDonald's in their neighborhood....
I am asking the Chief of the USCG Aids to Navigation Team in Woods Hole on Monday and will try to get you a good andwser...my gut says somthing to do with re-enforcing the structure but I will check with the expert.
Martie from what i gather they do this prior to it's being moved I can't figure it will hold it together but it has some purpose. They have started the moving process the ground work is in motion I can't wait to see this it's going to be cool I wonder what that light weights
Thanks, service guy. I'll document the move here. Stay tuned.
I talked to the guys from International Chimney, who were out there today. They are preparing for the big move. The wood strips are just to help sure up the structure. They have prepared the foundation where its moving to, and they will come back this summer to build the "track" to move it. There is little more than 60-ft left between the base of the ligt and the edge of the bluff. When it gets below 60-ft, its too late, so the move is coming quick. The move will be in August.

Thanks for all that information, Barb. It'll be interesting to see them move the lighthouse. I'll be out there every step of the way documenting it here on my blog.
